ARTHRITIC CONDITIONS OF THE FEET
Many types of arthritic conditions can affect the feet. The two most common type of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis or "wear and tear arthritis" is specific to one or several joints. It occurs when the joint surfaces of the bones wear down, possibly caused by a previous injury, long term mechanical stress on the joint, over use, or by other mechanical factors

Rheumatoid arthritis potentially affects the whole body and does not limit itself to independent joints. Rheumatoid arthritis involves the destruction of tissues within and surrounding the joint deformity, especially in high-stress areas such as the feet.

EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR FEET
Custom-made orthotics- In either type of arthritis, the highest priority is given to reducing pain and improving function. Custom-made foot orthotics have proven very successful in meeting these needs by maintaining proper foot and ankle position, relieving mechanical stress and alleviating pressure on sensitive areas of the foot. An orthotic alone is not the whole solution, and functions best when complemented with appropriate footwear.

Footwear - The proper footwear is as important as the foot orthotics. We think of the shoe and orthotic as being a complete system, whereby the two components complement each other. The shoe must be chosen both to accommodate and to support the orthotics.

Footwear Modification - The patient's footwear may be modified to accommodate a specific problem area or deformity of the foot in order to relieve pressure points and reduce pain. Custom-made sandals provide excellent support and relief, and are also beneficial to those with limited hand function because sandals may be slipped on and off without using hands, and do not require the tying of laces.

By using these orthotic devices, walking and standing can become much easier which encourages the return of regular activity.
